Resumo

Plot

In Brooklyn, New York, in 1957, Rudolf Abel retrieves a secret message from a park bench and reads it just before FBI agents burst into his rented room. He prevents discovery of the message, but other evidence in the room leads to his arrest and prosecution as a Soviet spy.

After Abel refuses to cooperate with the U.S. government, they have him tried, but want it to appear to be "a fair trial" so that the Soviet Union cannot use it for propaganda. James B. Donovan, an insurance lawyer with experience in criminal law, is assigned to defend Abel. Donovan takes his work seriously, although no one - including his family, his firm, the prosecuting attorneys and the judge - expects or wants him to do so. As news of him defending Abel is put on newspapers, Donovan is treated with disdain in public places. By contrast, Abel is impressed by Donovan's determination and professionalism, as well as his kindness.

At the hearing, Abel is found guilty of all charges. Before the sentencing, Donovan meets the judge and argues against sentencing Abel to death, observing that Able could serve as "an insurance" should an U.S. spy be captured by the USSR. The judge is apparently dismissive but - in the end - sentences Abel to 30 years imprisonment, to the public's shock and anger. Hate mails are sent to Donovan's office and on one occasion, shots are fired at his home. Nevertheless, Donovan appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court to reduce the sentence, on the ground that the evidence presented by the prosecution is tainted by an invalid search warrant, but his appeal is denied. Back in Manhattan, Donovan finds his own partner at the firm is turning his back on him.

In the meantime, Francis Gary Powers goes on a U-2 spy plane sortie over the Soviet Union, where his shot down and captured. He is convicted and subjected to interrogation. The USSR sends a backchannel message to Donovan, proposing a prisoner exchange: Abel for Powers. Determined to see things through, Donovan agrees to handle negotiations. As the USSR doesn't want to admit Abel is their spy, the exchange is to take place in East Germany.

Frederic Pryor, an American economics graduate student, visits his German girlfriend in East Berlin just as the Berlin Wall is being built. He tries to bring her back into West Berlin, but is stopped by border guards, arrested and labeled an American spy. Donovan tells his wife that he is going on a fishing trip to England, and travels to West Berlin, accompanied by CIA agents.

Donovan goes alone to the Soviet Embassy in East Berlin, and meets Ivan Schischkin, who claims to be Second Secretary at the Embassy; Donovan's CIA handler explains that he is actually the KGB's chief in Western Europe. Schischkin wants Abel released first, and Powers released several months after, but Donovan insists on a simultaneous release. Donovan also wants Pryor released as well, but Schischkin informs him that Pryor is held by the German Democratic Republic. Donovan begins to understand that the interests of the USSR and GDR do not overlap. The USSR wants Abel back, while the GDR wants to be recognized as a nation and an ally to the USSR. As a result, both wants Abel for themselves. Donovan meets Vogel, a GDR lawyer who supposedly represents Abel's family, and arranged to exchange Abel for Pryor.

Although the CIA is interested only in Powers' return, it allows Donovan to negotiate for Pryor as well as long as the Abel-for-Powers deal is not jeopardized. Schischkin informs Donovan that the USSR agrees with him, and sets the exchange on the Glienicke Bridge. However, Vogel pulls out of the negotiation after finding out about the deal Donovan made with the USSR. Donovan is contacted by Vogel's superior, Harald Ott, East German Attorney General, and goes to his office despite the CIA agents' protest. Donovan suggests the 2-for-1 deal, and Ott bluntly refuses and sends him out. Via his secretary, Donovan sends a message to Ott. He states that the US wants both Pryor and Powers for Abel, or the entire deal will be scrapped. Abel may talk, and the USSR would blame East Germany for refusing to give up Pryor. At the end of the day, the GDR calls and accepts the deal.

At the Glienicke Bridge, Donovan meets the grateful Abel. On the other side, Powers appears, but Pryor is to be released at Checkpoint Charlie, not the bridge. Both side urge each other to finish the deal, but Donovan wants to wait for confirmation that Pryor is released first. Out of gratitude, Abel agrees to wait with him. Eventually, Pryor is taken to Checkpoint Charlie, and Abel is exchanged for Powers on the bridge.

An exhausted Donovan arrives at home from the "fishing trip" and goes upstairs. As his family watch TV, they are stunned to learn that Donovan helped facilitate the release of Abel, Powers and Pryor. His wife Mary goes upstairs and finds him sound asleep.

Resumo

Plot

Zach Cooper and his mother Gale move from New York City to the town of Madison, Delaware. Their new neighbors are Hannah and her father, the mysterious grumpy man known as "Mr. Shivers". Hannah is friendly, but Mr. Shivers warns Zach to stay away from his family. At Madison High School where Gale works as the vice-principal, Zach befriends Champ, a socially awkward student.

One day, Hannah sneaks out of the house and invites Zach to hang out at an abandoned amusement park in the woods. After he returns home, Zach hears Mr. Shivers and Hannah arguing from his window, followed by Hannah screaming. He calls the police, but Mr. Shivers assures Officers Stevens and Brooks that nothing is wrong and the scream came from his TV. Gale leaves to oversee the school dance, leaving Zach home with Lorraine, his aunt. Fearing Hannah is in danger, Zach tricks Mr. Shivers into going to the police station for further questioning.

Zach and Champ break into Shivers' house to search for Hannah. They find a shelf containing dozens of Goosebumps manuscripts, all of which are locked. Annoyed with Champ's curiosity, Zach grabs a key nearby and unlocks one of the books. When Hannah confronts them, he accidentally drops the book The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena. The book opens, releasing the Yeti that trashes the house and escapes. Another book is dropped and opens by itself. They pursue the Yeti to a local ice rink, where Mr. Shivers appears and sucks it back into the book. On the way home, Mr. Shivers explains he is R.L. Stine, Goosebumps's author. He created his stories as a child to cope with severe bullying, but the monsters came to life, so he had to trap them inside their manuscripts.

Returning to the house, Stine and the kids are confronted by Slappy from Night of the Living Dummy, who is angry about being imprisoned. Before Stine can capture him, Slappy burns his own manuscript and flees with the other manuscripts. They are attacked by the lawn gnomes from Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes and flee after realizing the gnomes can't be destroyed.

Slappy releases the monsters, letting them rampage under his command. Zach suggests Stine write a new book to trap every monster, but he can only do it on a special typewriter which is at the high school. On the way there, Brent Green from My Best Friend Is Invisible and the giant mantis from A Shocker on Shock Street attacks Stine's station wagon, so they hide in a supermarket. There, Will Blake's werewolf form from The Werewolf of Fever Swamp pursues them and is eventually run over by Lorraine.

As they evade the Graveyard Ghouls from Attack of the Graveyard Ghouls, Zach notices that Hannah glows blue in the moonlight. At the school, he privately questions Stine about Hannah. Stine reveals that Hannah is a character he created to cope with his loneliness, but she thinks she's real. They find the typewriter and Stine starts writing the new book. Zach informs the students attending the dance of the situation and leads them to fend off the monsters, which are converging on the school. Slappy confronts Stine and breaks his fingers before he can finish the story.

Stine, Zach, Champ and Hannah board a school bus and go to the abandoned amusement park. Stine hands the book and typewriter to Zach, and distracts the monsters by letting the blob from The Blob That Ate Everyone devour him alive. Zach finishes the story, but is reluctant to open the book because Hannah will be trapped inside it as well. Hannah reveals that she knew all along, and opens the book, sucking the monsters into it. Zach tries to hold onto Hannah, but she accepts her fate. Before being pulled in, Hannah shares a kiss with Zach.

Sometime later, Stine has started working as Zach's Literature teacher and is in a relationship with Lorraine. After class, Zach asks Stine if he misses Hannah. Stine tells him that she will always be in their minds and hearts and then points to the hallway where Hannah is actually standing. Stine reveals to Zach that he wrote her back into existence with another book. Hannah and Zach kiss and leave school together, while Stine burns Hannah's manuscript. As he walks towards the exit door, Stine sees the typewriter typing by itself inside its display case. To his shock, Brent Green has evaded imprisonment and begins writing a story titled The Invisible Boy's Revenge.

Plot

Riggan Thomson is a faded Hollywood actor best known for playing the superhero Birdman decades ago in a series of films. He is often tormented by the mocking, critical inner voice of Birdman and frequently visualizes himself performing feats of levitation andtelekinesis. Riggan hopes to reinvent his career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production of a loosely based adaptation of Raymond Carver's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love".

The adaptation is produced by Riggan's best friend and lawyer, Jake, and also stars Riggan's girlfriend, Laura, and Broadway debutant Lesley. Riggan's daughter Sam, a recovering drug addict, serves as his assistant. During rehearsals, a light fixture falls onto Riggan's co-star Ralph; Riggan tells Jake that he believes that he caused the accident so he could upgrade the cast. At Lesley's suggestion, Riggan replaces Ralph with the brilliant but volatile method actor Mike Shiner, who is also Lesley's boyfriend. The first previews are disastrous: Mike breaks character over the replacement of his gin with water and attempts to rape Lesley during a sex scene. Riggan is incensed by press coverage praising Mike's performance in the show, but Jake encourages him to continue. When Riggan berates Sam for using cannabis, she tells him he is expendable and that his play is nothing but vanity.

During the final preview, Riggan sees Sam and Mike kissing. This further fuels his suspicion that Mike is a rival and potential threat. Riggan, a little freaked out, goes outside to take a smoke break wearing nothing but his underwear and a robe. He accidentally locks himself out of the theater, but his robe is attached to the door. He is forced to walk in his underwear through Times Square to get back inside; amateur videos of the incident go viral. After the final preview, Riggan, still deeply shaken by the events of the last few days, meets the influential critic Tabitha Dickinson, who tells him she hates ignorant Hollywood celebrities who only "pretend" to be actors and promises to "kill" his play with a deprecating review. Riggan gets drunk and faints in the street. The next day, as he walks back to the theater, his visual and auditory hallucinations intensify, and he fully hallucinates an extended conversation with a now visible Birdman, who tries to convince him to make another Birdman film. Riggan visualizes himself flying through the streets ofManhattan before returning to the theater.

Prior to the opening night, and with his hallucinations temporarily subsiding, Riggan meets Sam, who shows him the viral video of him walking through Times Square in his underwear. Rather than faulting her father for this, she admires him for it and comes to see him as more human and, finally, more accessible to her needs as his daughter. On the opening night, before the final scene of the play, Riggan confesses to his former wife Sylvia that he attempted to drown himself in the ocean after she caught him having an affair several years before. He also tells her about the inner Birdman voice he constantly hears in his head, which she ignores. After Sylvia wishes him luck and leaves the room, Riggan, whose character in the play commits suicide, replaces his prop pistol with a real loaded gun, and prepares to actually commit suicide in the closing scene of the play. As the performance reaches its final scene, Riggan shoots himself in the head on-stage. The play ends with a standing ovation from all in the audience except Tabitha, who abruptly leaves.

The next day, in a hospital, Riggan is revealed to have botched his suicide, merely blowing off his nose, which has been surgically replaced overnight. Jake visits him in the hospital and reveals that Tabitha gave the play a rave review, calling his suicide attempt "super-realism," a new form of method acting. Sam visits Riggan and soon steps out for a moment. He walks alone to the adjoining bathroom in his hospital room where he crudely dismisses Birdman and, seeing some birds outside, climbs onto the window ledge. When Sam returns, Riggan has disappeared with the window left open. She looks down at the street, then slowly up to the sky and smiles.
