Resumo

Depois de ser submetida a uma cirurgia estética facial, uma mãe (Susanne Wuest) volta para sua casa, uma casa isolada à beira do lago com seus filhos gêmeos de dez anos de idade, Elias e Lukas (Elias e Lukas Schwarz). Sua cabeça está embrulhada em ataduras, com apenas seus olhos e boca visíveis. Os gêmeos se amedrontam com a aparência de sua mãe e ficam ainda mais surpresos quando ela começa a apresentar um comportamento estranho. Ela intencionalmente ignora Lukas e aparece somente para reconhecer Elias na conversa. Embora esteja no meio do verão, a mãe ordena que os gêmeos mantenham as cortinas fechadas durante o dia, e impõe uma regra estrita de silêncio dentro da casa, e que lhes permite jogar apenas ao ar livre. A mãe também é cruel e dá uma bronca física em Elias quando ele exibe atos travessos ou desobedientes; algo que os garotos comentam que sua mãe nunca faria.

Os gêmeos começam a suspeitar que debaixo de suas ataduras, sua mãe pode não ser a mesma pessoa. Estas dúvidas são confirmadas quando encontram uma velha foto que mostra a mãe com outra mulher desconhecida que está vestindo roupas idênticas e ações características físicas semelhantes. Com a suspeita de que a mulher residente em sua casa é uma impostora, os gêmeos amarram a mulher na cama e se recusam a deixá-la ir até que ela lhes diga quem é a sua verdadeira mãe. A mulher insiste que ela é a sua mãe, e os gêmeos em última análise, selam a boca com fita adesiva para evitar que ela grite por socorro.

Enquanto isso, dois funcionários da Cruz Vermelha aparecem para recolher doações. Embora inicialmente aguardam o retorno da mãe, eles finalmente sair de casa depois de receber uma quantia em dinheiro grande de Elias, que ele discretamente roubou da bolsa de sua mãe. Enquanto isso, a mulher se liberta da fita adesiva em volta da boca e grita por ajuda, mas é tarde demais para atrair a atenção dos funcionários da Cruz Vermelha. Os gêmeos selam os lábios com super cola, apenas para perceber que ela é incapaz de comer. Os gêmeos cortam seus lábios com um pequeno par de tesouras.

Enquanto a mulher ainda está amarrada e presa, ela molha a cama. Os gêmeos definem rapidamente libertá-la de suas algemas, permitindo-lhe escapar. Os gêmeos, porém, criaram uma armadilha que faz com que ela caísse e batesse a cabeça, ficando inconsciente. A mulher acorda colada ao chão da sala. Elias começa a queimar a casa para pressioná-la a dizer-lhes a verdade sobre sua mãe. A mulher insiste firmemente que ela é verdadeira mãe dos gêmeos.

É revelado pela mãe que Lukas morreu em um acidente antes dos eventos do filme. Ela em lágrimas explica a Elias que a morte de Lukas não foi culpa dele e ela implora seu filho para libertá-la de modo que ambos possam passar da tragédia. Elias a desafia a provar que ela é a sua mãe, dizendo-lheo que Lukas está fazendo. Como ela não pode ver o Lukas alucinado ameaçando atear fogo a uma cortina, ela não pode responder à pergunta. Então Elias-acreditando que sua verdadeira mãe podia ver Lukas-agarra seu braço e as luzes da cortina. Posteriormente, a mãe queima até a morte antes de os bombeiros chegarem. O filme termina com um tiro fantasma da mãe reunido com seus filhos gêmeos em um campo de milho perto de sua casa.

The Film

Goodnight Mommy (German: Ich seh, Ich seh; UK: Goodnight Mummy) is a 2014 Austrian horror film written and directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. It was selected as the Austrian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.

Plot

After undergoing a cosmetic facial surgery, a mother (Susanne Wuest) comes back home to her modern, isolated lakeside house and her ten-year-old twins, Elias and Lukas (Elias and Lukas Schwarz). Her head is swathed in bandages, with only her eyes and mouth visible. The twins are unnerved with their mother's appearance and are further taken aback when she begins to exhibit strange behavior. She pointedly ignores Lukas and appears to only acknowledge Elias in conversation. Though it is the middle of summer, the mother orders the twins to keep the blinds closed during the day, imposes a strict rule of silence inside the house, and allows them to only play outdoors. The mother also acts cruel and lashes out at Elias physically when he displays mischievous or disobedient acts; something that the boys comment that their mother would never do.

The twins begin to suspect that beneath her bandages, their mother may not be the same person. These doubts are confirmed when they find an old picture that shows the mother with another unknown woman who is wearing identical clothes and shares similar physical traits. With the suspicion that the woman residing in their house is an impostor, the twins tie the woman to the bed and refuse to let her go until she tells them where their real mother is. The woman insists that she is their mother, and the twins ultimately seal her mouth with tape to keep her from screaming for help.

In the meantime, two employees of the Red Cross appear to collect donations. Although they initially await the return of the mother, they finally leave the house after receiving a large cash amount from Elias, which he discreetly stole from his mother's purse. Meanwhile, the woman breaks free from the adhesive tape around her mouth and yells for help, but is too late to attract the attention of the Red Cross employees. The twins seal her lips with Super Glue, only to realize that she is unable to eat. The twins cut open her lips with a small pair of scissors.

As the woman is still bound and trapped, she wets her bed. The twins briefly set her free from her shackles, allowing her to subdue the boys and escape. The twins, however, have set up a booby trap that causes her to fall and hit her head, knocking her unconscious. The woman wakes glued to the living room floor. Elias starts to burn down the house to pressure her into telling them the truth about their mother. The woman firmly insists that she is the twins' real mother.

It is revealed by the mother that Lukas has died in an accident prior to the events of the movie. She tearfully explains to Elias that Lukas's death was not his fault and she begs her son to set her free so they can both move on from the tragedy. Elias challenges her to prove that she is their mother by telling them what Lukas is doing. As she cannot see the hallucinated Lukas threatening to set fire to a curtain, she cannot answer the question. So Elias—believing that his real mother could see Lukas—grabs his arm and lights the curtain. The mother subsequently burns to death before the firefighters arrive. The film ends with a ghostly shot of the mother reunited with her twin sons at a cornfield near their home.
